After Bayern’s season ended with the DFB Pokal win over Dortmund, popular German website TZ.de sat down with FCB legend Franz Beckenbauer to discuss several topics. Here’s the full interview in English:
TZ.de: Mister Beckenbauer, did Bayern’s season go from GOOD to VERY GOOD on Saturday?
Franz Beckenbauer: Good, very good, but not SUPER. We failed to defend the Champions League, but in any case it was a very good season. It’s a pity that the players sort of inserted a creative break at the end of the season when it came down to winning trophies.
TZ.de: Did Guardiola adjust his tactical errors against Dortmund in comparison to the Real Madrid game?
Franz: You can’t say he made the wrong tactics. It was his assessment and it didn’t work – okay. But on Saturday they have played differently, they have placed a compact defense value and it worked.
TZ.de: Did they beat Dortmund with their own weapon?
Franz: There was tactical maneuvering from both teams, everyone waited for something to happen. There was too much mutual respect between the teams. No one wanted to fall back behind so both teams wated for a mistake from the other. Therefore, you can’t say that the better team won but maybe the club with the bigger luck. The shot by Hummels was a goal, the only question is was he offside prior to that.
TZ.de: In the end the „hospital“ of Bayern was saved over time.
Franz: Madness! I’ve never seen so many leg cramps in a football match. You had the feeling that Arjen Robben could’ve played a few more minutes.
TZ.de: After one year at Bayern, what did Pep Guardiola bring to the team?
Franz: I find it great. He has brought a pure game culture that has not always worked, but you can tell that progress is there. It’s difficult to switch to his style within just one year. I hope that a mix is created. Just as they have played in the preliminary round, which was perfect. Because they played with a short passing game but also faster forward. You have to sometimes shoot from the second row, that’s all football. So you have to be a bit more flexible – and they are.
TZ.de: Do you understand why the club was perhaps a little less excited in the last few weeks?
Franz: I don’t know about that. But it is normal. When you have a club that has such a high standard and when it doesn’t work that way you have to ask yourself – Why is it so? You’re here in Berlin, you’re the German Champion and from the moment nothing is there. You say: Okay, they’ve earned it, you wheeze through but it did not come back. It is incomprehensible.
TZ.de: How do you comment on the hype around Mario Mandžukić?
Franz: I cannot judge that. Something must’ve happened there, that I don’t know of. There must be something happening. Because if someone has the chance to be top scorer and you want to encourage him, then you give him the chance to be top scorer but it never happened. That’s why I believe something is going on there.
